About Bayou Rifles

About Bayou Rifles Bayou Rifles Inc (BRI) is a private and member's only range and it is not open to the public except for matches. It was established in 1936, when a group of shooters that used to regularly meet on the banks of Buffalo Bayou, under the Congress Street bridge, decided to form a shooting club that would provide opportunities for casual and competitive shooting, with safety as the primary rule.

Given its pioneering roots and wide open spaces, Texas has long been a mecca for shooting sports. After the end of World War II, the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) was set up by the US Congress and was instructed to make lands available to civilian organizations such as Bayou Rifles. The CMP was responsible for ensuring civilians were ready for the armed services.

Bayou Rifles operates two ranges, the Juliff range (aka The George R. Huffman Memorial Range) and the Addicks range.

The Juliff range was acquired from the Huffman family in 1948. It had been a National Guard training facility, but following WWII, was decommissioned. The Huffmans enjoyed shooting there, and when approached by BRI members, agreed to sell it the original 20 acres to BRI. In the ensuing decades the club acquired more land to expand the facility to include an NRA approved 300, 600 and 1,000 yards range.

The Addicks Range was built in approximately 1952, in the Addicks Reservoir, and the BRI works closely with the Corp of Engineers (COE) to maintain this range location for its silhouette shooting sports. In the 1960s Bayou Rifles Addicks range and the Ben Avery range in Phoenix alternated hosting the national silhouette championships, with up to two thousand competitors.

Bayou Rifles is well known in Texas and the nation for its metallic silhouette program in the small bore rifle, air rifle, and lever action rifle disciplines and Bulls-Eye Pistol. Bayou Rifles is also well established as a national force in High Power Rifle competitions. With the only 1,000 yards range and the numerous shooting venues available, Bayou Rifles is generally regarded as the premier shooting facility anywhere on the Gulf coast.

New members are welcome, and enrollment is available through our website "Membership Info" tab and select "Add Me To Mailing List".  We conduct new member orientations several times a year, as the registration list minimum requirements are met.
